Not all gingerbread is the same

That’s right, apparently, not all gingerbread is the same, or so I found out recently in my quest to make it. Who knew.

Well, it wasn’t hard to work it out, but seriously do you know how many recipes are out there for it?

There are a lot. Pages and pages on the google search.

Not all gingerbread is the same

Why am I making it

The reason for the search was that I wanted to make some for Christmas, obviously. I made them for the first time about 2 years ago. They were so good.

Then I had an idea. I have them sometimes, not always brilliant, but you have to have a go, right?

What if I made gingerbread to give away? My neighbour always mows the nature strip for us. He has been doing it for a few years now. We have never asked him to do it, but he still does it. Such a lovely thing and we really appreciate it. There is the problem, how do you thank someone for doing something like that.

Ha, make him some gingerbread, right. If he doesn’t like it, well he has a lot of grandkids.

I try to give him something each year, but it isn’t always easy.

The Recipe

So back to the two years ago. I went searching for the recipe. Usually, if I find a recipe I like I do one of two things with it.

  1. Bookmark the recipe on my computer so I can find it again, or
  2. Print it and put it in my recipe folder which I keep above the fridge.

There was no bookmark. There was no printed recipe in my folder.

I couldn’t believe it. I know I printed it, but thought it must have been thrown away. So I searched and searched the internet. OMG, like I said there are so many recipes. I knew I had to cook part of it. So I found one recipe that did that. Then I thought maybe I should just try a normal one. You know the ones that cream the butter and sugar, yada yada yada.

I have made both. Neither were as good as I remembered the other ones. I was getting frustrated.

This went on for over a week. I had made two batches and searched more, but still couldn’t find the recipe.

Then bam, I had another thought. There was a time we were keeping things, not on the front of the fridge, but the side. Guess what I found?

Yep, you guessed it, the damn gingerbread recipe. So much time wasted. When will I learn to put things away, PROPERLY?

Traditional Christmas gingerbread

This morning I made them and they were just as good as I remembered them. So happy, but I really wish I had had that thought over a week ago.

So now I’m in gingerbread mode. Next step, learn how to decorate them. I have never done piping, so that will be fun. That is planned for tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes.

So if you want to try the recipe, I found the right website. Just go toΒ Traditional Christmas gingerbread and you will find it.

Do you love gingerbread? How do you make it?

While baking

Yes, so while I was baking, I thought I might try my jam drops. I love these biscuits and eventually will do a post and maybe give you the recipe. It is one I got from my mother and we have been making them since I was a child.

I thought I might do something different, so instead of jam, I thought I would put red frogs instead.

Not all gingerbread is the same

Yeah, not sure I will do that again. The frogs look great, but they were very chewy. Sometimes you just shouldn’t mess with the recipe.

Okay, well it is back to the supermarket to get more ingredients since I wasted so many on bad recipes.

  1. This was funny–on the side of the fridge! I can so relate, Leanne. We took the tray out of our printer because our cats (we have 3) love to jump on it. So when I print from my office, I yell to my husband “Printing!” so he can catch the page and place it on the kitchen counter. Sometimes he doesn’t quite hear me and I go searching for my printed recipe, only to find it on the floor, underneath the printer. Aggravating!!

    1. That does sound aggravating, but the cats, that sounds cute, lol. You just never know where you might find things. Thank you Lois.

  2. Cool story, Leanne. I was laughing about the search, as I have done the same. I once lost a folding pocket knife I keep in my truck for emergencies. Was traveling with a friend in his vehicle, so I grabbed my knife. Stashed the damn thing in my camera bag for “safe keeping so I wouldn’t lose it”. Didn’t find it for over a year, and had already bought a new one. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    1. Thank you Tim. OMG I can so relate to that, putting something somewhere where you think you will be able to find it and then forget where you put it. LOL
